How to Install Self-Adhesive Wallpaper: A Step-by-Step Guide
Transforming your space with self-adhesive wallpaper is a straightforward process if you follow these essential steps. Here’s everything you need to know to ensure a flawless application.
Before You Start
Prepare the Surface:
- Ensure your wall is clean, dry, smooth, structurally sound, and free of mildew, grease, and other stains. Remove any loose paint and correct wall irregularities. All old wallcoverings should be completely removed.
Cure Freshly Painted Walls:
- For the wallpaper to adhere properly, freshly painted walls must cure for at least 30 days before hanging self-adhesive wallpaper. This ensures the surface is completely dry. For the best application and removal results, we recommend using primer.
Store Wallpaper Properly:
- Store self-adhesive wallpaper in temperature and humidity conditions similar to the installation environment. Avoid extreme temperature changes or high humidity, as they might affect performance. Rolling out the wallpaper and letting it stretch overnight can also help with installation.
Test Adhesiveness:
- Test a small section first to check for adhesiveness. We recommend priming walls before installation to improve adhesion and ease of removal. Allow the primer to dry for at least 24 hours before installing the wallpaper.
Avoid Excess Pressure:
- Apply the wallpaper gently. Too much pressure can stretch the material and cause pattern mismatch.
Water and Humidity:
- Wallpaper is washable, but too much moisture can affect durability.
Keep In Mind
Opaque Nature:
- Self-adhesive wallpaper is not 100% opaque. For the best results, paint patterned surfaces first.
Cutting and Applying:
- Use a sharp paper knife and a ruler to avoid tearing. Avoid using harsh squeegees that may scratch or damage the design.
Painted Walls:
- If applying over painted walls, ensure the wall is freshly primed to prevent peeling upon removal. Avoid applying wallpaper over untreated drywall or drywall that hasn’t been primed.
Moisture Levels:
- While wallpaper is washable, excessive moisture can hinder durability.
Removing Wallpaper:
- Remove slowly at a 180-degree angle to minimize surface tension. Use a blow dryer to soften adhesive for easier removal from tricky surfaces.
Surface Variability:
- We cannot be held responsible for damaged surfaces or removal difficulty due to various surface types and conditions.
Installation Instructions
Use Gloves:
- Wear cotton gloves during installation to avoid leaving fingerprints.
Clean the Surface:
- Wipe the wall with a dry cloth to remove dust, ensuring the adhesive sticks properly.
Position the Panels:
- Lay out the rolls beforehand to verify positioning. Find a level spot on your wall, as walls are not always 100% straight.
Peel and Stick:
- Peel back about 10 inches (25cm) of the backing paper. Stick the wallpaper to the top section of the wall and double-check it’s straight before applying the whole panel.
Smooth Out:
- Start from the top and work your way down. Use a squeegee or soft cloth to smooth out the panel from the middle to the sides, ensuring no air bubbles form. If bubbles appear, smooth them out or reapply the wallpaper.
Continue the Process:
- Take the next panel and remove the backing paper as before. Align the seams side by side. Ensure the pattern matches perfectly. Repeat until the wall is covered.
Final Touches:
- Smooth out every panel again after 24 hours with a soft cloth to eliminate any remaining air bubbles and ensure the seams have adhered properly.
